How Chiropractic Can Help Manage Stress

2020 has certainly been a year of added stress. It’s normal to deal with some stress, but it’s also something that requires attention. Today is National Stress Awareness Day, so it’s the perfect time to learn about our favorite stress management technique – chiropractic care. Here’s how chiropractic may be able to help you manage stress.

Physical Effects of Stress

Stress can manifest physically in many ways. Sleep loss, headaches, stomach upset, chest pain, and muscle tension can all be brought on by stress. One organ that is particularly affected by stress is your heart. Your heart rate is one way to determine how much stress your body is under and how healthy your nervous system is, specifically your heart rate variability.

You’ve probably heard of the fight or flight response before. Well, your heart rate variability is the balance between that response of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. If your heart rate variability is off, then you may be at risk for heart conditions, which is very serious.

Chiropractic treatments have been found to have a positive impact on heart rate variability and heart rate. For those that have been following our blog or have been visiting our chiropractic practice, you know that chiropractic does much more than simply relieve back and neck pain. It has many benefits for your overall health and wellness, including how your body deals with stress.

Manage Stress with Chiropractic Care

One of the foundational beliefs of chiropractic care is the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Regular chiropractic adjustments can help give your body the best opportunity possible to heal itself from the stress you experience.

As we mentioned earlier, stress often manifests itself through muscle tension. This can eventually lead to decreased function and health of the spine and central nervous system (CNS). When your CNS isn’t functioning at its best, then the rest of your body isn’t able to either. By treating muscle tension caused by stress, the chiropractors  help improve the function and health of your entire body. Additionally, when you feel better physically, you will be better equipped to handle stress that will inevitably come your way.
